The Hungarian (opening)

The Hungarian opening is an opening on the board of size 10. It was very popular on Playsite many years ago, but is now obsolete, since 10x10 Hex is no longer commonly played. The opening also lost popularity because it gives Red too big an advantage, and also because players became less focused on the centre in the opening. At one time, this was probably one of the most analysed opening lines.

The three first moves are as follows:

The most common continuation is as follows;

Now Red may play at the star. The two pieces at d5 and e5 are a great help for connecting to the top, and the outpost at the bottom right helps to connect to the bottom. The position is very difficult for Blue at the moment.
