::Not sure I understand your question, Roland. It says in the next paragraph that hexes marked '*' are not relevant to the template, i.e. it doesn't matter whether a1 is empty or not. I've marked all uninteresting moves with stars. After one of these moves, Red can play at f4 and has [[Template IIIa]] to one of the sides. This leaves eight interesting moves:

I seems to me that for template Vb to be a valid ladder escape for a fourth-row ladder coming from the right, the vertical player has to be able to double-chain at j2 and i1 (in the diagram, it is the horizontal player's turn; he is going to play h4, which intrudes into the template). For instance, if the horizontal player has a piece at h2, the opponent cannot escape. Is that correct?
