::Not sure I understand your question, Roland. It says in the next paragraph that hexes marked '*' are not relevant to the template, i.e. it doesn't matter whether a1 is empty or not. I think I will move this discussion shortly to the Talk page, so that it doesn't disturb the flow of the tutorial. — turing 13:53, 14 Jul 2007 (CEST)
This is based on template Va, but there are three more blue stones at a6, b5, c4.
I've marked all uninteresting moves with stars. After one of these moves, Red can play at f4 and has Template IIIa to one of the sides. This leaves eight interesting moves:
* Bf3 Rh3: Template IVa
* Bg3 Rf3 Be5 Wf4 Bf5 Rg4 Bg5: Red lost.

Template Vb as a fourth-row ladder escape from the right
I seems to me that for template Vb to be a valid ladder escape for a fourth-row ladder coming from the right, the vertical player has to be able to double-chain at j2 and i1 (in the diagram, it is the horizontal player's turn; he is going to play h4, which intrudes into the template). For instance, if the horizontal player has a piece at h2, the opponent cannot escape. Is that correct?

Blue resigns.

Explanation of the final situation
As it may not be obvious how Red is connected, let's assume Blue plays some further moves. The first plan is to cut the f4 group from the top.

<hex>
R13 C13 Q1 Vl12 Hi8 Vf9 He4 Vc4 He8 Vh6 Hg7 Vh7 Hg8 Vh8 Hg10 Vg9 He11 Vd10 Hc12 Vc10 Hb12 Vh9 Hh10 Vi9 Hi10 Vk9 Hj9 Vl10 Hj11 Vl7 Hk8 Vl8 Hk7 Vl6 Hk6 Vl5 Hk4 Vk5 Hi5 Vl2 Hm3 Vj6 Hh4 Vh5 Hi4 Ve5 Hd3 Vc3 Hd5 Vf4 Hg5 Vf6 He6 Vf5 Hf2 Vh2 N:on Hg3 Vf3 Hg2 Ve3 He2 Vd4
</hex>

Since c3 is connected to the top via Template IIIa, there's nothing more to do here. The next weak point is g6.

<hex>
R13 C13 Q1 Vl12 Hi8 Vf9 He4 Vc4 He8 Vh6 Hg7 Vh7 Hg8 Vh8 Hg10 Vg9 He11 Vd10 Hc12 Vc10 Hb12 Vh9 Hh10 Vi9 Hi10 Vk9 Hj9 Vl10 Hj11 Vl7 Hk8 Vl8 Hk7 Vl6 Hk6 Vl5 Hk4 Vk5 Hi5 Vl2 Hm3 Vj6 Hh4 Vh5 Hi4 Ve5 Hd3 Vc3 Hd5 Vf4 Hg5 Vf6 He6 Vf5 Hf2 Vh2 Hg3 Vf3 Hg2 Ve3 He2 Vd4 N:on Hg6 Vd8 He7 Vc7 Hd6 Vb6
</hex>

One last try in the lower right corner:

<hex>
R13 C13 Q1 Vl12 Hi8 Vf9 He4 Vc4 He8 Vh6 Hg7 Vh7 Hg8 Vh8 Hg10 Vg9 He11 Vd10 Hc12 Vc10 Hb12 Vh9 Hh10 Vi9 Hi10 Vk9 Hj9 Vl10 Hj11 Vl7 Hk8 Vl8 Hk7 Vl6 Hk6 Vl5 Hk4 Vk5 Hi5 Vl2 Hm3 Vj6 Hh4 Vh5 Hi4 Ve5 Hd3 Vc3 Hd5 Vf4 Hg5 Vf6 He6 Vf5 Hf2 Vh2 Hg3 Vf3 Hg2 Ve3 He2 Vd4 Hg6 Vd8 He7 Vc7 Hd6 Vb6 N:on Hl11 Vk11 Hj13 Vk12 Hd1 Vb2
</hex>

Now Red is connected via simple two-chains, and that's what Blue saw when he resigned.
